KA: Were you always a leader? When did the light bulb go on?
GG: When I was in grade school, I was sent to the principal's office frequently for misbehaving. The principal would often tell my dad "Genevieve has strong leadership skills, however, she's using them for the wrong things". When I got to high school, I began to use my leadership skills for student government. |
KA: If you could change one thing about UCI what would it be? Are you doing anything towards achieving this vision?
GG: To get more students involved in giving back to the community. I established an ASUCI community service commission called "Anteaters in Action", which provides students with a variety of volunteer opportunities. Through this commission, I hope to connect UCI to the community in a meaningful way and to promote the value of public service. |
KA: What is the best advice you've ever received about leadership?
GG: Great leaders inspire others to believe in themselves. They make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning. |
KA: What is your proudest accomplishment?
GG: Upon joining my sorority, I found my chapter lacking in community service and felt compelled to change this, leading me to run for Philanthropy Chair. Once elected Philanthropy Chair, I decided to change my sorority's campus wide philanthropy event and founded a new event called the KAT Walk. In our previous annual campus wide philanthropy event, my sorority raised only $1,000. This year, I set a goal for them to raise at least $5,000. After weeks of hard work, we raised over $6,000 for Court Appointed Special Advocates, which helps abused and neglected foster care children. I was so proud for getting my chapter to actively participate in our philanthropy and for gathering support from the Greek, UCI, and Orange County communities. The KAT Walk is now the official annual philanthropy event for my sorority and will continue on for years to come in honor of C.A.S.A. |
KA: What is your passion and how do you plan on incorporating it into your future?
GG: My passion is to advocate for underprivileged communities and stand up for justice. I plan on pursuing my passion through the legal field and/or government. |
